David practices making things from common or non-traditional materials. Using everything from books, postcards, sacks, or pillows, his work mirrors the ephemeral quality of the found materials from which they are made, often to document marginal lives or neglected places.
David Montano was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and educated at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His work has been exhibited at the Mattress Factory (2007), Braddock, PA’s Unsmoke Artspace (2008), the Carnegie Museum of Art (2009, 2013), the Governor’s Island Art Fair (2012), the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts (2013), and Kunsthal Charlottenborg, DK (2013). David has won numerous awards including grants from The Pittsburgh Foundation (2012) and BNY Mellon (2008).
David lives and works in Pittsburgh with his wife and two children. His work is in the permanent collections of the Pittsburgh Public Schools and the Carnegie Museum of Art.
