I am a storyteller. I have no choice. I must do this in order to survive.
I seek to stoke the bright fires of my imagination, build poetic monuments to my memories and stir the reflective waters of my inspired emotions through introspective visual representations.
Color plays the music while my hands write the rich lyrics of shape and line. I arrange arcane elemental iconography and fantasy themes with primitive human and animal forms, inscribing my expressionistic hieroglyphics upon the eternal moment. Myth and legend are my muses.
There stands the hero, who has set out on a quest for truth and purpose. Behind him walks the bard, following him on his epic journey, singing a Soulful narrative of his exploits for all to hear.
As an artist I embody a similar split, creative personality.
I am the bard, singing as I am dreaming up the story, and how best to tell it. Then, as the artist, I am compelled towards creating an image of it all, thereby making the invisible -visible. I am also the hero in each picture. The story is MY story- and I am ever present in the artwork.
My quest is a noble one, to achieve perfect happiness and enlightenment.
The antagonist of my adventure comes in many forms, but most often is characterized as time and mortality.
Esoteric as my imagery sometimes seems at first glance, it is truly primordial and incredibly simple. The timelessness of the symbols I use purposefully disguises contemporary ideas in a veil of ancient mysticism. Now and then I will use anachronism to draw the obvious parallels, but only to embellish the twisting semantic prose.
It is through this contradiction and subtle sarcasm that I assure my art does not make excuses for what it is. It is honesty above all, no false faces, no contrived subject matter or burdening socio-political messages…just emotive, purposeful, unfiltered “truth” about my visual sensibility and what I enjoy looking at, thinking about and surrounding myself with.
It’s my way. It’s what I love. It is absolutely who I am.
I will continue to explore my developing technique, delving ever deeper into the archetypal fountain of language I draw upon to write my unfolding fairy tale. I will tell this story through my Didactic Tarot.
I will use familiar symbols and gestures to communicate universal truths and complex ideas about existence and the relationships between individuals.
I am challenging myself to display my mind, discern my essence, and reveal my heart and spirit in vibrant images that sing a passionate, personal song.
My journey has begun. The ultimate goal is a pure, cohesive statement about life and about myself -and hopefully, a happy ending.
