‘At the foundation of the place of healing’ is where I, (SubSanctuary) begin the journey of my artistic meditations. By creating stimulating works primarily with wood and other natural materials, I hope to open up an authentic conversation between you, (the viewer), and nature, ultimately moving you from a superficial understanding of what you’re looking at to a deeper, more fundamental idea of the character and history each material emanates. Trees, being the vital life-giving organisms they are, as well as the fortifying and heavily-exploited resource our society is built on, have a complicated, oft forgotten story to tell. By carefully combining their unique visual and textural elements with my original graphic layouts, I hope to move your perception from the surface to the core; taking you on a hand-crafted journey from foreground to background.
My work draws heavily on the contrast between Eastern and Western philosophies of the window and the act of “seeing” in general. I hope to not only bring you closer to the material you’re interacting with, but to engage you in an actual shift between focal points. Questioning my own mechanisms of perception has led me to see the world and the way I interact with it in a new light, and I wish that for the viewers of my work as well. Utilizing the light-emitting power of a modern laser-engraver and the unfailing techniques of ancient wood-working, I turn art into a tool for the increased admiration and conservation of our natural world.
