My work draws from the psychological experience induced by stress. I use paint to explore my internal and external responses caused by cultural pressures for perfectionism. By studying and utilizing two-dimensional design principles in art history such as complementary color theory, the paintings visually evoke the diverse associations of my anxiety. Though stress is a universal psychological experience, the emotional struggle is relative to each individual person. My hope as an artist is that by allowing the viewers into such a vulnerable and intimate view of my person that they can relate to my diverse associations of stress and to the honesty in putting my emotions at the forefront of my work.

Michelle Colbaugh received her Masters of Fine Arts at Indiana University of Pennsylvania concentrating in oil painting.
