“The Dead”

Oh Death, where is thy sting a-ling a-ling?

O Grave, thy victor-ee?

The bells of hell go ting a-ling a-ling

For you but not for me.

(anonymous soldiers song from WWI)

"The Dead" is a series of installations that address our relationship to death, remembrance and loss of identity. This work-in-progress encompasses a variety of media from textiles to cut-paper silhouettes, and has been developed since 1999.

Whether you believe in an afterlife or not, at some point you will meditate on your own end --- is it a step off a cliff or will you be given wings to fly? Will you be remembered? Does it really matter?

The yearning we feel to reach behind the final curtain has shaped the myths and beliefs of every culture. Drawing from these customs and rituals, this project searches for visual expressions of the tension between our longing to be remembered after death and the inexorable march of time, which dissolves bones, stones and memories.
