I've been swimming since I was 6 months old, and I've always loved animals, so together this means an affinity for aquatic life. Whales in my opinion undoubtedly possess sentience, and based on our unequal relationship, probably more empathy than we have to offer. As long as I can remember I have always felt an original sin sort of guilt over the way we as a species treat all of the other ones. Whaling to me is the epitome of this, as it has been so glamorized in our culture- Moby Dick, vacationing at Nantucket, the 80s save the whale craze- despite, and almost because of its inherent bloodiness and gore. In these instancesI take an indulgent fascination and pleasure in creating images of us losing.
